Lychakiv cemetery is one of the oldest and most famous cemeteries in Europe. It is located in Lviv, on an area of 40 hectares, and is home to more than 300,000 burials, including more than 2,000 gravediggers.
The cemetery was established in 1786, after the Austrian authorities banned burying people in old cemeteries , then located in the city around the temples. Since then, it was one of the four cemeteries of Lviv (the other three have long since ceased to exist) and was intended for the Midtown and the IV district of Lviv.
The cemetery mostly buried wealthy and prominent residents of the city, although as early as the beginning of the 16th century, this area was already used for burials of the destitute. The nationality of the buried was different, as evidenced by the inscriptions on the monuments in different languages: Latin, Polish, German, Dutch, Romanian, Greek.
24 chapels have been preserved in the cemetery - tombs of wealthy, mostly noble families. Among them:
neo-Romanesque chapels of the Kshechunovychs and Kiselkys
neoclassical chapel of the Moledzinski family
chapels of the Adamskis, Lodynskis, Bachevskys
neo-Gothic chapel of the Zetners< /p>
On the territory of the cemetery there are a number of military memorials dedicated to the events of different historical eras. Among the oldest are the burials of participants in the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. In Soviet times, part of the rebel cemetery was destroyed, arranging the burial of some party figures.
Lychakiv cemetery is an important historical and cultural object. It is home to many valuable monuments that tell about the history of Lviv and Ukraine.
The cemetery contains the graves of many prominent people, including:
